newborn twins. { frost on flower }

Back in February I met these lovely little girls for the second time.  The first time I "met" them was when I photographed their mama and their older sister for a maternity session.  They booked the First Year Plus package with a maternity add on so I'll be seeing these little ones again soon.  Mama's maternity photos were lovely but she opted to keep them private.

As anyone who has had or been around a newborn baby probably can assume... newborn sessions can be quite challenging.  I provide a list of tips to help the session run smoothly but sometimes those tips don't work well for a family or sometimes the babies do whatever they please... because that's what babies do best.  My tips include the temperature of the space, how to be prepared, how to assist me in running the session, etc.

I set up our space and started with some larger formal family portraits before moving on to just the girls.

The girls weren't in the mood to sleep much during the session but for the few moments that they did we were able to capture some peaceful twin love.

As newborn girls often do, they each had their own custom made hats.

In general positioning one newborn baby isn't overly challenging, especially if they're sleepy, but position two usually means you just have to go with the flow and see where they end up.  But regardless of what happens, newborn babies are adorable and extra adorable when they're squished together.

I love the following photo because it captures what parenting twins can really be like.  Mom and dad both have a hand on one little one, attempting to console and calm her while the other becomes increasingly more upset and can sense that her parents are nearby but not tending to her own needs.  Twin parenting must be full of plenty of compromises - even with both sets of parent's hands around to help.

Their older sister had her newborn session at a Sears Portrait Studio two years ago.  The family was hoping to replicate the same style of photo so that they could all be placed somewhere together.

As it turns out their older sister had a bit of a center gradient in her photo's background so I later had to go back and edit these... but I much prefer the solid black background.

They were hungry.

And of course we had to snap a few photos of older sister all dressed up for the formal family portrait.  I typically shoot family photos in a more lifestyle setting but this family preferred formal photos - we used the same space that we did for the maternity session but hung up one of my many fabric props to use as a backdrop to change things up a bit.

tips on taking your toddler to the dentist. olive's first time.

Today Olive went to the dentist for the first time.  Yesterday she was upset that she wasn't going to the dentist yesterday.  Today it snowed... but not nearly as much as we had anticipated.

Olive is less than familiar with things such as medical offices.  She hasn't yet had her two year well child check and her most recent appointment was Feb. 21 2012.  Olive went to the doctor maybe 2-3 times relatively soon after birth but she, of course, doesn't remember those times.

Yesterday I told Olive we were going to the dentist.  I told her that the dentist looks at our teeth and that they might poke her teeth and that she would sit in a really big chair.  I told her that first I would have my appointment, they would look at, clean, and poke my teeth, and that if she wanted to, she could watch.  She seemed ready, showed me her teeth, and tried to poke all of mine.

Olive's first time:

Olive was a little cranky today (she needed a nap, but she didn't take one of course) so I was a little concerned about our plans.  We drove a couple of blocks away to pick up our friend Brooke.  Tyler was supposed to come with to the appointment but with the snow today he wasn't able to get away from work so Brooke came with us instead.  I didn't want Olive to be confined to the exam room and she needed someone around in case she had to go potty.  Thankfully Brooke was willing and able to come with.

We drove a few more minutes and arrived at Mill City Dental in the cute Bryn Mawr neighborhood.  While waiting in the waiting room Olive enjoyed some water and watching saltwater fish on a television.

When it was my turn she joined me in the room and asked a ton of questions - Brooke could hear her from the waiting room.  She continually said "what's this what's this?" about every instrument, tool, and part of the chair.  The hygienist let Olive lower me in the seat and explained in detail everything she was doing.  Olive kept asking to sit on me and was trying to properly place my hands on the armrests of the big chair.  She also kept asking me what I was doing... but I couldn't respond.

After a little while she told me she had to go potty so I told her to run over to Brooke.  They took care of the potty while the hygienist inspected and cleaned my teeth.  The doctor came in and did his thing while Olive and Brooke played with puzzles in the waiting room (I think).

In case you're curious I need to floss a little more and I have one very teeny tiny cavity.  Only my second so I wasn't too disappointed.  Admittedly I've become a little terrible at keep up with my teeth since staying home with Olive - not having a daily routine of leaving the house each morning has screwed me up.

I finished up and met everyone in the waiting room as the room was reset for Olive.

The hygienist soon came out and requested Olive.  Olive ran ahead of us straight into the room that I had been in and climbed into the chair.  She was sitting in it and ready to go.

Untitled

Olive was offered a pair of sunglasses.  After a lot of thought she picked orange.  The hygienist was impressed at her ability to make a choice and to know her colors so well.  The hygienist was actually really impressed by Olive's communication skills and overall composure.  Kind of timely considering my previous post.

Untitled

Untitled

The hygienist talked Olive through each step - she counted her teeth using the little mirror and then counted her teeth using the little poking stick thing.  She has 20 teeth.  Olive opened and closed her mouth on demand.

Untitled

The hygienist then told Olive she would clean her teeth.  That's right... with the little spinning brush thing and the little pouch of special dentist toothpaste - just like they do with you.  First she cleaned the front of Olive's top teeth, sprayed them with water, and used the suction thing.  Then the back of the top teeth, water, and suction.  The front of the bottom, and so on.

Untitled

She then flossed Olive's teeth for her.  I was shocked.

After all of this the hygienist found the dentist and told him Olive was ready.  Olive requested that Brooke join the room so I left Olive to get Brooke.  When the dentist arrived Olive was suddenly uncooperative.  He asked Olive if he could see her teeth and she said "nope" after a long pause.  He asked a few times and she eventually pursed her lips in a dramatic tight kiss face.  At one point he asked very nicely and attempted to open her lips with the little mirror but her teeth were clenched.  All while she had no expression on her face whatsoever.  Everyone in the room was laughing.  If you know Olive I assume you can picture this.  No expression... but very determined to be doing what she's doing.

We talked to Olive about how great she did with the hygienist but she still didn't want to open her mouth.  Eventually the dentist let her push some buttons on the chair to tilt it back up.  He showed her how the water and air sprayer worked and let her squirt the floor and he blew air into her hair.  Soon she agreed to show him her nice beautiful clean teeth and opened up wide.  He counted her teeth and put the mirror inside to make sure everything looked good.

Untitled

Afterwards he congratulated her on a great appointment and told her that she broke the record.  The previous record holder for the youngest fully successful dentist appointment was 2 1/2 years old and was held by his own daughter.  So... good job Olive!  And the hygienist continually mentioned Olive's level of communication and how well behaved she was for a new to being two two year old.  Overall it was a really great time for all of us.  :)

What can you do with your toddler?

The way to prepare yourself and your child for a dentist or any other type of appointment largely depends on your child and your family.  In Olive's case a lot of preparation wasn't needed but it also wouldn't have gone as well as if I had suddenly sprung it on her.  One night of chatting about it coming was enough.  Talking too far in advance would likely bother her because she would want to do it sooner.  But some kids need significant advance.. it's up to them and you can probably tell which kind of kiddo you have.

You can prepare however many days in advance by talking about the dentist, reading a book about the dentist, pretending to play dentist, looking at pictures of a dentist office, etc.  If you need step by step instructions for a more anxious kiddo you can draw up a little instruction sheet or booklet or even go into your office and take photos of everything beforehand - most offices should be perfectly receptive to that.

If needed you can drive by the dentist office or even visit once or twice to try out the really big neat chair.

It's also very helpful to have them witness someone else's appointment.  While Olive did try insisting that she wanted her appointment to be before mine, it was helpful for her to see me have my check up and see that I survived, before having her own.  This could be done immediately before (like ours), earlier in the day, the day before, or a week before - whatever prep you think your child would need best.  But make sure that the person your child is observing is not a squeamish dentist attendee.  The receptionist at our car repair place that we visited this morning told me that she recently scheduled an appointment for her husband and her 3 year old daughter on the same day.  He doesn't like the dentist and whines immensely about the appointments.  If he doesn't step up to the plate and take on the challenge of leading by a great example he may instill a sense of anxiety in his daughter by accident.  Of course that isn't guaranteed to happen but it's more likely than observing a fun and comfortable appointment.

In all aspects of your child's life there are simple things you can do to prepare them - this often lessens stress and anxiety and provides some expectations.  If you don't think your child will be able to tolerate an entire exam make sure you tell them that it's okay.  Most dentist offices don't expect to be able to full examine a toddler's teeth anyhow - the minimum they hope for is to count their teeth and make sure they're in the right places.  If your child can't handle it... make sure you tell them that's okay and remind them that they did a really great job trying.  Encouraging trying is really important and useful for a child's development of self esteem - focusing on the failure or short comings, at such a young age, just isn't useful.

Regardless of how well they do during the appointment, offer some sort of reward if it'll be helpful or needed.  A treat, a trip to the park, even something that you may have done anyways.  Sometimes seeing a light at the end of a tunnel can be great encouragement to work through the uncomfortable things.

So sit down and take a little time to plan out the best approach for your family and any new appointments that may be approaching.  It takes a little extra time to be prepared but if it makes the appointment successful and avoids a meltdown it is certainly worth it.  And if it makes them willing and exciting to go to their next check up then you've really done something right.

Good luck!!

I enjoyed this dentist office.

It's small and located in a renovated residential building in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis.  Depending on who you ask that's the northernmost part of south Minneapolis, the westernmost part of downtown Minneapolis, or the southernmost part of north Minneapolis.  It feels more north to me because it's straight south on Penn from our house - just seven minutes.  And is north of 394.  But whatever.  I don't think you care.

They don't push having your wisdom teeth being removed.  Both Brooke and Tyler are still with wisdom teeth and have been told previously that the teeth must be removed - here they're told it isn't necessary until they cause a problem.  Which makes sense to me.

As Brooke recently discovered, they do not do x-rays of your teeth if you're pregnant and the dentist prefers to put off any major dental work (save for the typical check up and cleaning) until after giving birth.  He said something like why mess around with it if it isn't necessary.  That's cool.

They don't do fluoride treatments unless you request one.

There is a K-Cup machine in the waiting room.  I didn't partake - but that seemed better than hours old burnt coffee.  :)

They gave Olive a tub of Tom's toothpaste (it does have fluoride but the hygienist pointed out that it's dye free) and all of their sinks have a bottle of Mrs. Meyers hand soap next to them.

Also the receptionist is 27 weeks pregnant with twin girls.  I'm not sure that's really important though.

communicating with olive.

I'm not really one for baby books or recording overly interesting information about Olive.  Maybe sometimes that would be nice to have but I don't foresee myself looking back for that information at any time during my life.  I hardly even look back at photos.  And I don't want to make it easy to compare Olive, developmentally or otherwise, to other children or to any future children that we may have.  I can really only imagine wanting to look back on Olive's "stats" in order to compare to another one of our children in the future.. but I don't think that is at all necessary.

But sometimes I think it may be nice to at least have a little picture of what things with Olive were like at various points during her younger years - it's obvious that a parent's perception of what children are like, especially babies and toddlers, becomes quite skewed and inaccurate as they becoming increasingly distanced from that period of their life.  Adults around my parents age almost always seem shocked about certain things that Olive can do and remember.

For example.. remembering.. Olive has an awesome memory for people and events.  It's true this long term aspect of her memory will not last forever, unless she is one of those lucky few with super early memories, but that doesn't mean that she can't remember anything.  She remembers things that she did for her birthday, at Christmas, and last summer.  She remembers people that she met last summer and has little interaction with since.  She remembers that her grandpa eats Cheerios, even though she only experienced that at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  When going to visit family in Iowa Olive is excited to see everyone - "Papa, Gama Judy, Abby, Kyle, Pipi, Suzie, and chickens."

Olive is getting really imaginative.  She likes to make pretend phone calls when we're in the car and she often adds pauses as if her conversation partner is responding.  In the car her calls usually sound something like this.
"Hi Abby, Adi. How you?"  (she still calls herself Adi)
pause
"Drivin' in car.  Good.  What doin'?"
pause
"Gotta go, drivin' in car. Bye, talk later!"

Yesterday she told me that she was a ukelele and was singing a song (without words) that she was making up.  I thought that was creative... to BE a ukelele.

I honestly have not a clue as to how many words are in Olive's dictionary of daily use, but I know it's a lot.  At 24 months it's typically to have 200-300 words and to construct simple sentences.  Olive is certainly blowing this benchmark away (but that doesn't mean she is better or smarter than any of her friends that don't talk as much).  I thought to make a list of her words but I'm not really sure the point and it'd be a daunting task... so I won't.

She uses descriptive words and talks about things being big, little, loud, quiet, fast, slow, dark, long, heavy, etc.

She describes things by their taste (spicy, sweet, delicious), texture and feeling (soft, bumpy, wet, cold, warm, hot), and by their color (this morning she told us that it was white outside (yes, it snowed) and that the white covered up the brown and green.  She will occasionally mix up a color but she knows most of the usual colors and will even tack on light or dark to describe them better.

Olive knows a lot of foods - she helps me find chia and quinoa at the store.  She knows what typical vegetables are but also things like beets and leeks and ginger and mushrooms.  Last summer, during our CSA months, she knew what fennel, dill (often mixed up the two, understandably), leeks, different types of squash.. all were.  She forced me to buy a honeydew yesterday.

We shop in bulk at small co-op stores so Olive experiences food a little more hands on.  She sees me fill my spice jars and other containers so she knows things about cumin, coriander, chili powder, peppercorns, and more.

The co-ops usually have small child sized carts and Olive helps me shop.  Everyone always seems impressed that she can maneuver such a heavy cart - she insists on loading it up with all of the produce and anything else she can fit it and then she carefully follows me and never bumps into anyone or anything (except for me.. on purpose).  Olive isn't one to sit and wait so these carts are wonderful - giving her a job at the store makes her a lot more receptive to being there.  It'll be nice to give her her own list when she's a little older.  For now I just have her help me find what we need next (since I'm obviously not intelligent enough for that and am always getting lost in the store..) and she helps me fill our bags or containers sometimes too.

When we're somewhere public, usually with other kids and moms around, and Olive is feeling comfortable, she'll sit next to a parent she has never seen before and will try to strike up a conversation. On Monday she talked to a mom about the kids that were running.  Yesterday she talked to a fellow shopper about the cold rain outside.  It's a neat little part of her personality because I know plenty of very verbal kids do not have a desire to sit down next to random parents and try to talk to them.

A few weeks ago we were in a child's clothing store and a little girl, around six years old, was following Olive around.  She asked Olive where her mommy was.  Olive brought the girl to me and then told her "Here's mom mom.  This is mom mom.  Dad dad at work, far away."

Today Olive kept yelling out the window.. "Go away snow!  Summer, where are you?"  Because she wants to swim, is usually the reason she gives.

There are plenty of things that Olive says that I understand better than others.  She doesn't really babble unless she's being funny and making up a word or sound.  I get a little bothered when people seem to assume she's just babbling and don't ask her to say something again or wait for her to repeat herself.. some people just seem to brush little kids off as unintelligent.  Olive surprises me daily with her intelligence.  I think it bothers her as well.. but I guess that's part of being a little kid.  Some of her word mistakes are really cute but she's fixing so many of them right now.  So far "a little bit" is still "a libble dit"... I think that's my favorite.  :)

Olive likes to sing songs.  "Monkeys on bed" in a favorite as well as the alphabet, of course.  She can get through the entire alphabet accurately, when she's not distracted or being silly.  But some of the letters don't sound quite right - but at least there is a placeholder for each letter.  At the end she says "no more ABCs, next time sing with MEEEEE".  She also likes to sing "eio have farm".  She really likes to suggest that the farmer has an "Adi" on his farm, who blows out her nose, and a "kiwi" fruit on his farm, who makes a loud squeak sound.  And then typical farm animals, of course.

She has one show that she gets to watch every few days.. somedays we watch a little more television (I blame it on the gloom sucking away my energy and motivation to move).. But her favorite show is Super Why.  She finds "super letters" everywhere now, especially at night when we're in the car.  And then she puts them in her "super compudder!!!"

Olive is working on getting all of the names of her fingers straight.  She's usually 60-80% accurate but if it's been a few days she seems less confident.  Her favorite is her pinky finger but she also like "poider".  The others are middle, "wing", and "fumb".  She is also working on solidifying her grasp of right vs left.  I think she's almost got it.. but again, if it's been a while between talking about it she often forgets.

We're still working on learning Spanish words but I really need to get better at remember to include them or she isn't really going to get anywhere.  She has great Spanish pronunciation, it's such a natural language.. but if I don't keep feeding her words she isn't going to be saying or using them.  Ooops!

So.. if you care about the details of Olive's communication - there you go!  I thought my blog may be a good place to keep little snip-its like this of some of Olive's bigger developmental progress.. just in case I do want or need to look back someday.  But I'm not going to be all crazy about it.

a few words wednesday. { olive's favorite things }

Olive LOVES sunglasses.

Did you know that?

Here's proof:

9/9

8/9 I enjoyed these.

4/9

3/9 2/9

This is a 9 photo series of Olive trying on sunglasses and requesting photos of her wearing them. I didn't photograph them all. Because oh my. Photo 1/9.

She can also been seen wearing sunglasses, at least once per day, at home. One of her 15 or so pairs.
 That's an overestimate.

She's the coolest person you know.

Because. (Her idea, not mine)

weather woes.

Remember my recent post about going outside?  And not shivering?

Today Olive and I attempted to run a few errands... we had to cut it short when little shards of ice started falling on us.

According to NOAA, we're expecting around an inch of snow and sleet tomorrow.  There is a 100% chance for up to 7 inches of snow tomorrow night.  There is a 100% chance for up to 7 MORE inches of snow on Thursday.  And a 90% chance of up to 2 inches of snow Thursday night.  Saturday's high is expected to be around 40... so the snow won't last long.  But um... Not cool.  We may see more than 15 inches of snow come Thursday night.  My goodness.

I suppose it's a little fitting that the sleet stopped us from buying bags of planting soil for the front yard along with wildflower seeds and soil and organic manure for the garden.  And maybe some solar lights to spiff up our sidewalk a bit.  I guess.  At least we were able to buy paper yard waste bags.. that we can fill with snow.

Next week better be sunny.  This gloom is so seriously not cool.

If April showers bring flowers... what does April snow bring?  Ice cream?

we went outside!!

It's late.  I'm tired.  But I haven't posted anything here in so long.. I thought I should.  Because that's important, right?

Olive and I WENT OUTSIDE TODAY.  Like more outside than just running to the car or briskly walking from one building to another.

Guess what?  It was 53 degrees outside!  Holy buckets!  Did you know that last year, on Easter, Olive participated in an Easter egg hunt in our backyard wearing a dress and little sweater.  As did I, and Tyler only wore a sweater.  The Easter before that was similar.  What's going on 2013?

But let's not dwell on the past - today we went OUTSIDE.

I had intended to take Olive to the park but Tyler ended up having to go into work late and stay late so he took the car.  So then I thought we'd make a huge adventure of our first nice day and walk to the park (it's really not that far).  But Olive took some sort of weird epic nap which screwed up that plan.

I ended up feeling cold and tired later in the afternoon (nothing new) and was hesitant to leave our warmer home for a cooler outside since I was already cold.  But we put on our coats, grabbed some materials for doing chores, and went OUTSIDE.

What did we do?

I picked up trash in the front yard that had been stuck in the snow all winter.
Took down some of our Christmas lights (need to grab a ladder for the rest).
Burned sticks and brush.
Raked the garden a little until I sunk in the mud.
Began digging out a garden expansion.
Continued the seemingly never ending job of picking up dog poop.  Which, like the front yard trash, had been stuck in the snow all winter.  Ew.
Broke down boxes for recycling.
Tidied up a few things.
Brought the garden hose out of the garage.
And things.

Olive walked around.
Ran around.
Rode her bike around.
Tried not to walk in Honey's poop.
Put sticks in the fire.
Touched lots of things.
Squished mud.
Sprayed herself with natural bug killer, which then resulted in a jacket change.
Ran inside for a potty break.
Threw toys at the dog.
Touched other things.
Tried to shovel ice.
Tried to shovel nothing.
Parked her bike in the garage.
Found a piece of pink chalk that survived the winter and scribbled on the sidewalk before coming inside.

Here is some photographic evidence of our being OUTSIDE:

Today was 53 degrees. I think she was a little confused.

She's confused.

Yes, we will finish our fence.

We began a garden expansion. Because who needs a yard?

Coat change + garden expansion.

Biker babe.

Really excited to be riding her bike somewhere that is not living room.

So happy to run. :)

Evidence of excited running.

And run.

And more. You should view this one large. It's rather cheerful.

And.. Oops.

I missed.

Burned stuff. :)

Olive enjoyed the fire.  She said "fire! sometimes hot!"

And snow. Still.

Someday this will melt.  Will it be when the sun's placement is farther north and it's warmers rays peek over our southern fence?  Or will it be due to warmer temperatures?  Who knows.  But there are nearly fossilized pieces of dog poop in there that I need to remove.

On that note.... good bye.

olive is TWO

Yesterday Olive turned two!  She had a really full and fun day.  I'm excited that she's two - she is so much fun and is so intelligent.  Things keep getting more enjoyable and interesting each day (except for the whining).

Olive is still diaper free, except at night.
She can carry on simple conversations and has great spontaneous language.  Sometimes she never stops talking - I really have no idea how many words are in her vocabulary.. she'll repeat and start using any new words I tell her.
We're slowly working on learning Spanish also but I'm not very good at remembering about it.  There are quite a few words she can say in Spanish better than English - it's pretty funny.
She continues to be really stable on her feet - she doesn't fall too often and has yet to have any major bumps, scratches or injuries.
She has friends and that is really cute.
She likes to color and paint.
She doesn't watch too much tv but over the past few days keeps talking about "super one".  The only thing I can think of is Super Why on PBS and if I say that she gets really excited.  But she's probably seen that maybe three times.
One time Olive watched Yo Gabba Gabba.  Months ago.  She talks about it a lot.  Sometimes we listen to the music but it's kind of weird how much she talks about it.  And if she sees a picture of it?  She gets really excited.  But she watched in once.  Months ago.  Weird.
Olive is beginning to terrorize Honey.  She puts stickers on her.  Pretends to clip her toenails.  Tries to sit on her, hug her, kiss her, pull her around the room.  Poor Honey.
She enjoys the snow but she keeps talking about going swimming.  I can't wait for summer.  :)
I think her favorite letter is W, at the moment.
She still has a floor bed, nurses a few times a day, cleans up after herself (usually with a reminder to do so), and likes to sing songs using a xylophone mallet as a microphone.
She's pretty great.  :)

Disclaimer: I did not edit any of these. I was not having a good relationship with my camera yesterday.

20130220-TWO-3.jpg

Yesterday Olive turned two! Luckily she woke up kind of early so we had enough time to calmly get dressed, eat breakfast, and enjoy her birthday morning before heading to story time at the library in Roseville.

20130220-TWO-4.jpg

Olive is always so serious in "posed" photos.  It's hilarious.

20130220-TWO-5.jpg

Eventually she tried to have a little fun.

20130220-TWO-6.jpg

20130220-TWO-7.jpg

We went downstairs and I had some gifts and cards waiting for Olive to open.

20130220-TWO-8.jpg

She fed Honey - her morning "chore".

20130220-TWO-9.jpg

I picked out her shirt for the day and she picked out this new skirt that she got for Christmas - it was her first time wearing it and she was pretty excited.

20130220-TWO-10.jpg

Olive had a big bowl of steel cut oats with apple, raisins, and cinnamon.  And a pig pile of homemade maple whipped cream on top.  :)

20130220-TWO-11.jpg

She was unusually excited to see her turtle.

20130220-TWO-12.jpg

And was not excited that I was taking so many photos.

20130220-TWO-14.jpg

20130220-TWO-15.jpg

I made her a crown Tuesday night while watching a show with Tyler. I almost forgot!  The big red circle is a reindeer nose - the theme of her birthday party in a week and a half.

20130220-TWO-16.jpg

She ate her oatmeal and waited patiently for Tyler to come downstairs so she could open her things.

20130220-TWO-18.jpg

She has been looking at this card for about a week now. She kept saying she was ready for her birthday because she wanted to open it.

20130220-TWO-19.jpg

It took a while.. but she got it.

I gave Olive some new Babylegs leg warmers.  One of which she wanted to wear right away.

20130220-TWO-29.jpg

And some really exciting finger puppets.

A butterfly.

"babydoll!"

Right away she gave it a kiss.

20130220-TWO-52.jpg

And a hug.

20130220-TWO-53.jpg

I asked her to hold it up so I could see it.

20130220-TWO-54.jpg

And then it was suddenly time to go to story time.

20130220-TWO-55.jpg

We all bundled up and Honey looked on jealously.

20130220-TWO-58.jpg

We dropped Tyler off at work and headed to the coffee shop attached to the library.  We always meet Amber and Ethan there before story time and now Brooke and Madeline meet us also.

20130220-TWO-61.jpg

Olive still can't get over that Brooke is there.

20130220-TWO-62.jpg

She really seriously drinks her smoothie. Every week.

20130220-TWO-63.jpg

I didn't want to be the weird mom taking photos with a big camera so I only took a couple.

20130220-TWO-64.jpg

Shaky eggs!  She always picks purple.  Two for her and two for me.  But when asked I think she says her favorite color is yellow.

Right before story time was over everyone sang happy birthday to Olive.  :)  We joined in playtime for a little while but Olive had to go potty so we had to go out to the car.  She is currently protesting using toilets anywhere other than home so we use the car potty a lot again.  This would be less annoying if it weren't freezing outside.

20130220-TWO-66.jpg

Next we went to Babies R Us to find something special for Olive.  She had a tiny coupon and I thought it'd be fun to walk around and play with the toys and kill some time.  I also picked up a little fold-up potty.  We have a few kid sized potties for Olive but they're too big to bring into stores and buildings.  I didn't like the idea of buying yet another one but this one is only a couple inches thick when folded so I can just carry a bag again when we're out.

20130220-TWO-73.jpg

Just before we arrive home Olive fell asleep in the car.  Olive hasn't really napped for months now but sneaks one in every couple of weeks.  I'm still hoping they return but it's been months since she's been nap free.  I assumed we would be out late so I was totally fine with the car nap.  Until one hour into it when I was bored out of my mind and really had to use the bathroom.  So the nap ended.

20130220-TWO-76.jpg

She wanted more oatmeal for lunch.

20130220-TWO-77.jpg

She really really REALLY likes oatmeal.

20130220-TWO-78.jpg

She also likes this snake.

20130220-TWO-79.jpg

We talked to my dad on Facetime and Tyler's mom on Skype.  We talked to my mom briefly too but I think Olive was really done with the phone at that point.

20130220-TWO-80.jpg20130220-TWO-81.jpg20130220-TWO-82.jpg

Don't you talk on the kitchen floor, too?

20130220-TWO-83.jpg

While we were talking to my dad someone from Rebuilding Together showed up.  They helped us do some work on our house last Spring.  They had a huge donation of thing from Toro and were dropping them off to people they've worked with in the past.  So, to add to Olive's birthday loot, she now has an electric snowblower, leaf blower, and weed whacker.  They're hers since they arrived on her birthday, right?

20130220-TWO-85.jpg

Olive was really excited to see the moon. As usual.

20130220-TWO-86.jpg

Olive and I drove "DOWNTOWNNN!!!!" to the Orpheum to pick up Tyler.  Brooke and Scott met us there and we headed out to Maple Grove to go to Chuck E Cheese.  Neither of which is really our thing but the whole idea really amused me.

20130220-TWO-87.jpg

Look it's Scott, on his phone.

20130220-TWO-89.jpg

This is a typical sight.  Tyler is always bringing Olive back.  Especially like this.  Do you see her hands?  I don't think she was happy about it.  haha.

20130220-TWO-91.jpg

We waited a long long time for our pizza.

20130220-TWO-96.jpg

We sat in the party room.  I don't really remember this place from my childhood but the general consensus was that it isn't nearly as fun as it used to be.  There was no ball pit and barely any tubes for climbing in.  There was no longer a big show - just this one mouse.  The live mouse was really bad at his job.  Overall it was really disappointing but Olive had a great time.  She got excited for the two birthday parties that were there.. not really realizing that it was for other kids and not her.

See that?  Chuck E Live?  Nope.  He was nowhere to be found.  Even after they counted down for his arrive for FIVE WHOLE MINUTES.  And they had his voice speaking about how to do a dance.  Last we saw him he was heading to the kitchen.. when they were counting through one more minute.  Yep.

20130220-TWO-104.jpg

Olive and I took a trip to the little toddler room.

Olive and I climbed up in the thing a few times.  She needed help with the first climbing section.  Soon a mom pointed out how her "too small" son was able to do it but pulling onto the net.  I showed Olive how and soon she was climbing up and going down the slide repeatedly.  She met a friend inside that helped her every once in a while.  But we occasionally caught a glimpse of them pushing and could hear a few screams.  Olive doesn't really have the ability to ask friends to move and to ask them to stop something quite yet.  But they worked it out.. no biggie.  :)

Brooke and I put our tickets into the ticket counter and were standing there for what felt like forever trying to figure out how to get our receipt.  Oh, maybe push that big button.  Right in the middle of the machine.  Whoops.

20130220-TWO-147.jpg

We got home way past Olive's typical bedtime but she had a few more gifts to open from nini.

Overall she had a really great day and she is excited for her birthday party!  Too bad she has to wait a while.. but it'll be here soon!
