Snow fun.

The radio claimed last week's snow as the last hurrah before Spring. I wasn't planning on putting all of my snowballs in that basket.. But just in case, and since the next day was supposed to be frigid, we enjoyed sometime outside.

Can't beat the sun when it's hanging so low in the sky. :)

Can't beat June when he's bundled up into a puff.

Pretty pup.

I really like the feel of these photos. Even though I was really there.. they really make you feel like you're there.. don't they? Or is that just me because I was there?

I had so much fun with the lens flare. Olive and June probably had more fun when I was pulling them around in their sleds. But we had to pause for flare. Because.. Obviously..

June considered a round of golf.

Honey got some snow on my lens.

June conquered the backyard. One careful step at a time.

Olive obliged my request to try blowing some snow. It was the fluffy kind that doesn't pack well.. so I had high hopes!

And then it was time to go inside and have hot cocoa. ;)

weather woes.

Remember my recent post about going outside?  And not shivering?

Today Olive and I attempted to run a few errands... we had to cut it short when little shards of ice started falling on us.

According to NOAA, we're expecting around an inch of snow and sleet tomorrow.  There is a 100% chance for up to 7 inches of snow tomorrow night.  There is a 100% chance for up to 7 MORE inches of snow on Thursday.  And a 90% chance of up to 2 inches of snow Thursday night.  Saturday's high is expected to be around 40... so the snow won't last long.  But um... Not cool.  We may see more than 15 inches of snow come Thursday night.  My goodness.

I suppose it's a little fitting that the sleet stopped us from buying bags of planting soil for the front yard along with wildflower seeds and soil and organic manure for the garden.  And maybe some solar lights to spiff up our sidewalk a bit.  I guess.  At least we were able to buy paper yard waste bags.. that we can fill with snow.

Next week better be sunny.  This gloom is so seriously not cool.

If April showers bring flowers... what does April snow bring?  Ice cream?

2012 advent : day 14

In this post I am going to avoid talking about today's tragic events - I'll leave that to another post.  Olive's advent activity took place as the events were unfolding and before we heard the news.

For Olive's 14th advent activity we went outside to build a snowman.  It's supposed to rain quite a bit tomorrow which means less snow on the ground and more icky slush.  This year has been odd, weather wise, so I wanted to squeeze this in in case we don't have another good snowman building opportunity.  I'm sure we'll get more snow but it's likely it might be too chilly to play outside for long.  I think it was in the mid 20s when went out this morning and it felt quite nice in the bright sunlight.  :)

We went into the front yard because it was a lot less trampled on the doesn't have doggy messes.

She saw a bus on Broadway as soon as we went outside.

20121213-advent-day14-4.jpg

The snow was surprisingly terrible for packing.  The thin top layer was able to pack a little.  So we made a tiny snowman.

20121213-advent-day14-5.jpg

Olive liked him.

20121213-advent-day14-7.jpg

Or her?  Maybe she's wearing a dress.

20121213-advent-day14-9.jpg

Olive decided to go for a walk.

20121213-advent-day14-11.jpg

I put my camera down and started throwing snowballs at her.  Mostly at the sidewalk right in front of her so they would explode all over her.  She thought it was funny but I think she really wanted me to hit her with them.

20121213-advent-day14-12.jpg

I asked her if I could lay her down in the snow (I've been asking for days) and she said yes.

20121213-advent-day14-13.jpg

But maybe didn't have a great time.

20121213-advent-day14-20.jpg

I found a leaf and asked her if we could use it as a hat for the snowman.  She said yes and tried to pick it up.  On the fifth try she finally got it in one mitten and brought it over.

20121213-advent-day14-22.jpg

She tried to put it on.

20121213-advent-day14-23.jpg

But it fell off right away.  Her mittens are about twice as long as her hands.. it's hard to be a little kid in mittens.

20121213-advent-day14-24.jpg

I said "oh no!" and then she knocked our snowman down and stepped on it.

20121213-advent-day14-27.jpg

I said "oh no Olive squished the snowman!" and she immediately got on top of it and said squish.  She asks to get squished a lot so I guess she wanted to squish the snowman since I said squish.

20121213-advent-day14-30.jpg

And then she wanted to go into the backyard.  I let her in through the side gate and I ran through the house (with my snowy boots on!) to grab my keys.. I wanted to get the sled out!

20121213-advent-day14-33.jpg

I pulled Olive around for a while - she had to lay on it and I had to pull the actual sled as the rope was broken.  It was fun but not that fun.  So I ran inside and grabbed kitchen shears and cut down the twine I had hanging for a clothesline.  I tied it onto the sled and we had the most fun Olive has ever had!

20121213-advent-day14-35.jpg

She insisted on laying on the sled on her tummy while I put the rope around me and ran around the yard in a big circle.  She was giggling the entire time.

20121213-advent-day14-36.jpg

I would make sharp turns so she would fall off.  Honey came to check on her.

20121213-advent-day14-38.jpg

She giggled and came back for more.

ha.  :)

We did one more run after this and went inside to warm up.  I hope we can do this more this winter!  :)

2012 advent : day 10

Today's activity was a little disappointing.  I moved a few things around so we could do this one specifically today.

Have you ever played with bubbles outside when it's cold?  They freeze!  And they break!  It's really neat.  I thought a sunny day full of fresh snow but a very cold temperature would be the perfect day.  It's a hard thing to schedule since I can't predict the weather.  Last I hear today's windchill was supposed to be -5.

Either it wasn't cold enough or our bubbles weren't the right kind.. they didn't freeze!  But Olive didn't really seem to mind either way.  We spent a few minutes outside playing in the snow and blowing bubbles.  We kept the bubbles open and set in the snow in case they needed to be colder but still couldn't get them to freeze.  Some got a little more rigid and seemed to pop in slow motion but that wasn't what I was going for.  Oh well, we still had a good time.  :)

So.... today's photos look a little similar to yesterday's.

20121209-advent10.jpg

She was ready to bundle up again and play.  Complete with her sticker from the post office still.

20121209-advent10-5.jpg

I loved the wispy clouds.

20121209-advent10-14.jpg

She got stuck.  That's how deep the snow is.

20121209-advent10-19.jpg

I dug her feet out and plopped her on top of the snow.  I hoped she would want to lay back in the snow but she wasn't too keen on that idea.

20121209-advent10-21.jpg

I couldn't help myself - I kept laughing at her behind.  She's about 3 times wider than normal.

20121209-advent10-22.jpg

Looking at the bubbles.

20121209-advent10-24.jpg

Giving it some time.. hoping it will freeze.

20121209-advent10-30.jpg

Bubble chilling.

20121209-advent10-32.jpg

Olive got bored with my attempts to remedy our bubble situation.

20121209-advent10-33.jpg

So she tried to clean the sidewalk.
